GM will surpass Tesla!
General Motors CEO Marie Barra said they will surpass Tesla in the US market by 2025. In 2021, 420,000 units were sold in Hong Kong in China, surpassing the sales of the Tesla Model Y. Model Y has been China's best-selling electric car ever.
According to General Motors (GM), 500,000 electric cars were sold in 2021, after Tesla's 930,000. However, this figure also includes the number of Hongguang. Because General Motors' other electric vehicles such as the Chevrolet Bolt have sold only 43,000. As such, General Motors will have to travel a long way to overtake Tesla.
General Motors wants to further capture the Chinese electric vehicle (EV) market. That's why the country's local carmaker SAIC and Wuling Automobile have started a joint venture. GM wants to win the competition with Tesla, the company of Elon Musk.
Hongguang Mini EV Showroom has already been opened in Shanghai for the interested buyers. The salespeople provide great encouragement to the buyers for this affordable electric car. One of them said, there is no doubt about the quality of this car. Because General Motors and SAIC have invested behind it.
SAIC is the largest joint venture maker of Hongguang Mini. General Motors has a 44 percent stake. General Motors is continuing its efforts to capture the Chinese small electric vehicle market through this project.
The biggest reason for General Motors to lag behind is the quality of their batteries. In 2021, a fire broke out in the battery of a General Motors car in South Korea. As a result, General Motors was forced to withdraw more than 140,000 Chevrolet Bolt cars from the country's market. The company then spent 200 million dollars to replace all car batteries.
Work is also underway to create a new battery for electric vehicles in conjunction with the new LG Charm. By 2035, General Motors wants to be known only as an electric car manufacturer.
